Frequenting our local farmers markets in the Sacramento Region is fun even in these cooler autumn days.  Seeing the pear harvest is exciting and delicious! Fruit farmers are bringing out their barrels of pears…but how do you know what type you want to purchase and consume? So many decisions! Pears are cousins of apples. American varieties come from Europe, where they migrated from central Asia. Early colonists brought the first trees to America where they thrived until blights became severe. Most pears are now grown west of the Rockies where diseases are less of a problem. In The Odyssey, the Greek poet Homer calls pears a “gift of the gods.” Asian pears are the oldest known cultivated pear. Pears come in so many varieties (10 that we know of – we have listed 8!) Here are a few to look for at the local farmers markets:

What Folks are Saying!

My friend and I enjoyed the charming and informative guide Nate as he led us around mid-town Sacramento on a 3.5 hour guided food and history tour, which features such delicacies as french toast from Cafe Bernardo to pulled pork carnitas and margaritas from Centro to ice cream at La Bombe, portobella mushroom bites stuffed with asiago cheese at Formolis and iced coffee from the Coffee Works.. At each of the restaurants we visited, we talked with the chef or manager about the local sourcing of the food, about their food philosophy, and their food passions. As foodies ourselves, it was like meeting new "old friends". The downside was a city temperature of over 90 degrees but the walk was still fun and we didn't feel pressure to "hurry up"; Nate was a delightful guide and clearly enjoys his job. Since the two of us (small group!) are local Sacramentans in our golden years, we felt we knew a lot of history of the area, but Nate was able to tell us stories which we didn't know about and which enriched our tour immensely. I would recommend this tour to anyone who likes food, likes to walk, likes to learn about history, and who likes to have fun!
